The Chinese languages (also referred to as “Chinese”) do not constitute a single language but rather a language family. The best-known and most widely spoken languages in this family are Cantonese and Mandarin.
Mandarin is the language spoken as a native tongue by the largest number of people: about 898 million native speakers (and around 40 million learners as a foreign language). It serves as the basis for Standard Chinese, which is an official language not only in China but also in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Macau.
