Medical Physics for Physicists Procedure

The continuing education program is designed as a blended learning course.

The modules consist of in-person units lasting two to four days with full-day lectures and practicums, combined with online video lectures. Depending on the course, the online lectures must be completed either before or after the in-person sessions (see schedule overview). All course content is assessed in an exam during the following in-person unit. During the online phase, lectures are provided as video files, which can be accessed at any time and as often as needed.

Classes usually take place between Wednesday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For details, please refer to the schedule.

Participation requirements

  • A degree in physics or a physics-related field of study and sufficient knowledge of physics
  • German language skills at least at DSH2 level

The academic director is responsible for reviewing the participation requirements and for admission to the program. Admission is based on the entry requirements and the availability of places. Once admitted, your registration is binding.

Participation in individual modules of the program is confirmed with a certificate of attendance, while successful completion of the entire program is confirmed with a certificate from Heidelberg University. In addition to at least 80% attendance in each in-person unit/submodule, successful completion of the written exams (covering all content from both in-person and online units) is required. These exams usually take place during the first two hours of the following course. For equipment demonstrations and practicums, 100% attendance is mandatory.

The scope and content of the program, totaling more than 360 hours, follow the requirements of the curriculum (Continuing Education Regulations) of the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP). The program is recognised by the DGMP until 2027 as proof of theoretical knowledge for professional recognition in Medical Physics, specialisation in Medical Radiation Therapy, specialty field Radiation Therapy (WBO 2022).

Each participant must individually apply for recognition by the DGMP. The entry requirements of the DGMP’s continuing education regulations must be observed.

Those wishing to use the content of the program to obtain radiation protection expertise must clarify with the relevant authority whether the program is recognised.

Radiation protection courses are not included in the curriculum; they must be completed with a specialized provider.

The language of instruction is German. In some cases, lecture slides or presentations may be in English.
